1 IN 3 CHILDREN IN CHICAGO ARE LIVING IN POVERTY

DIAPERS ARE NOT COVERED BY GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE

September 27, 2021 @ 8:00 am October 1, 2021 @ 5:00 pm

Representative Hirschauer is proud to partner with Share Our Spare to host a diaper
drive from September 27 – October 3, 2021 to help end diaper need in Chicago. The
facts about diaper need in Chicago are sobering:

  • 1 in 3 children in Chicago live below the federal poverty level
  • Despite the overwhelming need, government assistance programs do not cover diapers and wipes
  • Parents report having to choose between food or diapers for their children

Share Our Spare is a Chicago-based non-profit with a mission to ensure every child in
Chicago has access to the basic essentials necessary to thrive in the first five years of
life. Share Our Spare collects new and gently used items for children ages newborn to
5 and distributes them to families living in poverty through a network of 100 social
service agencies. During Share Our Spare’s first 8 years they distributed 1 million
diapers but because of the COVID-19 crisis they distributed 1 million diapers in 2020
alone. These diapers went to more than 40,000 children in need. This year Share Our
Spare is on track to distribute more than 1.5 MILLION diapers, helping parents focus
on caregiving instead of worrying about securing the basics for their children.

We invite you to help Share Our Spare collect 250,000 diapers for their National
Diaper Need Awareness Week drive by:

  • Purchasing diapers at the Share Our Spare Online Diaper Drive
  • Bringing size 4, 5, and 6 diapers and Pull-Ups for Representative Hirschauer’s collection drive. The donation bin will be located at our office (946 Neltnor Blvd, #108, West Chicago 60185) during the week of September 27th.
  • Making a monetary donation here to help Share Our Spare purchase diapers at cost.

WEST CHICAGO, Ill. – To increase access to vital mental health services, state Rep. Maura Hirschauer, D-Batavia, sponsored a new law to expand insurance coverage for mental health services.

“Accessibility to mental health care, especially as we continue to recover from the pandemic, is essential,” Hirschauer said. “Under new law, people will now have access to necessary mental healthcare and know that their insurance will cover it.”

House Bill 2595 expands the standards for medically necessary treatment of mental, emotional, nervous, or substance use disorders and requires insurers to cover medically necessary treatment. It also prohibits insurers from limiting the duration of benefits or coverage for the treatment of mental, emotional, nervous, or substance use disorders and conditions. The law will take effect starting Jan. 1, 2023.

“Despite mental conditions not being visible, they are just as important and need to be covered by insurance, just like any other disorder or illness,” Hirschauer said. “This new law will give those suffering with mental, emotional, nervous, or substance abuse disorders the care they need to regain control of their health.”

WEST CHICAGO, Ill. – As part of her commitment to bringing accessible services to her constituents, state Rep. Maura Hirschauer, D-Batavia, is hosting a Family Health Fair on Saturday, August 14 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in West Chicago.

“As we get ready to send our children back to school and we are also seeing a new rise in COVID-19 cases, I want to make sure the entire family is ready and healthy for the forthcoming school year, not just the kids,” said Hirschauer. “This health fair is a way for families to not only get free health check-ups, but learn how to stay healthy for the rest of the year.”

Hirschauer’s Health Fair will be on Saturday, August 14 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, located at 155 N. Prince Crossing Rd. in West Chicago. Families will be able to get free vaccines, food from the local food pantry, school supplies, baby supplies, a health check and information about local services to ensure longevity and good health. Since the event will have children present, masks will be required for both vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

“I am excited to bring these resources to the people of the 49th District,” said Hirschauer. “I encourage anyone who can to come check out the fair and learn ways to stay healthy.”

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Menstruating students in 4th through 12th grade would have free access to tampons and pads in school bathrooms under a plan sponsored by state Rep. Maura Hirschauer, D-Batavia, which passed the House last week.

“Everyone who menstruates can relate to the discomfort and embarrassment that comes with not having access to period products when you’re bleeding through your clothes,” said Hirschauer. “There are so many reasons why students might not have a tampon or pad with them. For those from low-income families, it’s often an added expense they simply can’t afford. And regardless of their financial situation, younger students who are starting their period for the first time will probably be caught off guard and without a pad.”

Under current state law, schools are required to make menstrual products available to students in at least one bathroom in the building, which is typically located within the nurse’s office. The Hirschauer-backed House Bill 156 aims to make these products more easily accessible by requiring they be stocked in all bathrooms that students use.

“If a student realizes they’ve started their period during the school day, we want them to be able to quickly and discretely get what they need so they can return to class,” said Hirschauer. “This bill recognizes that periods are a normal part of life and that menstrual products are as much of a necessity as other hygiene items like soap and toilet paper. I was glad to see it pass the House recently and look forward to this bill becoming law.”
