Big Boy in West Chicago

The City of West Chicago welcomed 61,000 visitors to see Big Boy, the largest operating steam locomotive in the world, on its journey across the nation for the Union Pacific America’s 250th Anniversary Tour. Huge shout out to all the city staff who made an incredibly well-run event!

Governor Pritzker Signs Hirschauer’s Safe Storage Bill

CHICAGO, Ill. – This morning, Governor J.B. Pritzker signed State Representative Maura Hirschauer’s(D-Batavia) Safe Gun Storage Act into law. The culmination of a tireless fight by advocates and legislators, the Safe Gun Storage Act(SB8) ensures household firearms are kept out of the hands of children, teenagers, and criminals through tighter storage requirements and increased regulations on reporting lost or stolen firearms.

“Safe firearm storage and responsible gun ownership are practices on which all of us, gun owners and non-gun owners alike, can agree. SB 8 is a commonsense gun safety measure that enhances safe firearm storage requirements and strengthens the reporting and data collection processes for lost and stolen guns,” said Hirschauer. “By promoting responsible gun ownership, this bill aims to prevent unauthorized access to firearms—helping reduce unintentional injuries, suicides, and acts of intentional harm, including school shootings.”

The Safe Gun Storage Act requires firearms to be properly locked away when in a household with children, at-risk individuals, or those ineligible to receive FOID cards. Additionally, the act mandates that stolen or missing firearms are reported to local law enforcement within 48 hours of the discovery. Illinois State Police will now be able to revoke a FOID card if a gun owner fails to report a lost or stolen gun more than twice.

Hirschauer Pushes for Higher Education Costs Transparency

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – With college and university tuition costs reaching historical highs, state Rep. Maura Hirschauer, D-Batavia, is sponsoring a bill that would require Illinois colleges and universities to disclose their historical and current cost of attendance so prospective students and families can make better informed decisions about their college of choice.

“The more information we can arm Illinois families with while they are making these important financial and education decisions, the better,” said Hirschauer. “This measure will benefit high school students applying for college, parents who want to realistically budget, and ultimately foster transparency and empower students to make the best decisions based on their financial situation.”

Senate Bill 1376 states all Illinois public and private colleges and universities must post their cost of attendance on their website for the past 10 academic years and each year going forward. By promoting this tuition transparency, prospective students and families can easily compare institutions and understand price trends, in which historical data can help track how financial aid may impact overall cost of attendance.

“As costs of attendance climb to new heights each year, it’s extremely important students and families have the tools available to navigate an already stressful process,” said Hirschauer.

Senate Bill 1376 passed favorably out of the Senate Chamber and awaits a final House floor vote, expected later this month.

Hirschauer Joins Community Leaders to Support Memorial Highway Honoring SFC Theodore Katsoolias

WEST CHICAGO, Ill. – State Rep. Maura Hirschauer, D-Batavia, joined veterans organizations, community members, and fellow legislators on Saturday to support dedicating a section of Illinois State Route 59 honoring Sergeant First Class (SFC) Theordore Katsoolias, a beloved West Chicago serviceman who made the ultimate sacrifice while deployed.

Highlighted through an ongoing House Joint Resolution, the stretch of Route 59 from State Route 64 to State Route 38 would officially bear the name “SFC Theodore A. Katsoolias Memorial Highway” if passed. The joint resolution currently awaits House consideration.

“I want to thank my colleague Rep. Kifowit for bringing this dedication before the House and to the organizations and countless others who have fought for this memorial for SFC Katsoolias,” said Hirschauer. “We often see roads dedicated in honor of the service members who have represented not only our country but our great state. I hope that once this dedication is enacted it serves as a reminder that the countless servicemen and women who choose every day to be a part of our military have a profound impact not only on our families, but on our communities and nation as a whole.”

SFC Katsoolias was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army’s Company B, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. During his service in the Korean War, SFC Katsoolias was deemed missing in action (MIA) before being presumed dead. His remains have not been recovered.

“Sergeant First Class Theodore Katsoolias is an American hero who should be remembered for his bravery and ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom,” said state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego. “He was never able to return home, but we can permanently honor his memory and the countless sacrifices made by our service members in Korea with this recognition. I appreciate the support of Rep. Hirschauer on this important measure.”

“The prospective SFC Theodore Katsoolias Memorial Highway runs right in front of my and state Sen. Villa’s office, and I’m honored I’ll be able to look out my window and remind myself how SFC Katsoolias and so many others like him gave their all for our country. My hope is that this dedication will serve as a reminder that SFC Katsoolias’s willingness to protect his family, community, and country is an example to each of us to do the same in our own ways,” said Hirschauer.

Working with local members in her Veterans Advisory Committee, Hirschauer recently passed bipartisan legislation designating the third Friday of September of each year as POW/MIA Recognition Day in honor of prisoners of war (POW) and those missing in action (MIA). House Bill 1312 will ultimately dedicate time for all Illinoisans to reflect on U.S. soldiers’ service, and currently awaits Senate consideration.

Rep. Hirschauer, Sen. Villa Distribute Backpacks, School Supplies to Families in Need

WEST CHICAGO, Ill. — To help families prepare for the new school year, state Rep. Maura Hirschauer, D-Batavia, and state Sen. Karina Villa, D-West Chicago, partnered with WeGo Together for Kids to hand out hundreds of backpacks full of school supplies to local students.

“Thanks to the generosity of dozens of community organizations, West Chicago students will have what they need to learn and thrive in the classroom,” Hirschauer said. “I am tremendously proud of our community for coming together and helping those in need. When we work together, we can make a real difference in the lives of our young people.”

Hirschauer and Villa co-hosted WeGo Together for Kids’ seventh annual school supply event in late August, distributing 976 backpacks to School District 33 students from kindergarten to eighth grade. During her time in the Illinois General Assembly, Hirschauer has been a fierce advocate for education. Most recently, she passed a budget that increases evidence-based education funding by $350 million and invests millions of dollars in special and early childhood education.

“I couldn’t be prouder to represent such a giving community,” said Villa. “I’m incredibly
grateful for all the local organizations and community members who came together to help our
students start the year off on the right foot.”

Rep. Hirschauer Brings Mobile Museum of Tolerance to Local Schools

WEST CHICAGO, Ill. — State Rep. Maura Hirschauer, D-Batavia, in partnership with state Rep. Fred Crespo, D-Hoffman Estates, and state Rep. Seth Lewis, R-Bartlett, is inviting residents to experience the Mobile Museum of Tolerance. The museum will visit Hawk Hollow Elementary School, Sunnydale Elementary School and Kenyon Woods Middle School from Sept. 6-9.

“As we experience a rise in hate crimes nationwide, teaching our children to respect and celebrate people of different races, religions and cultures is now more important than ever,” Hirschauer said. “Education plays a key role in promoting tolerance and civility, and I am so excited to bring this outstanding educational opportunity to our community.”

The Mobile Museum of Tolerance is an initiative of the Simon Wiesenthal Center aimed at empowering people to stand against racism, antisemitism and all forms of hate. The museum uses technology and interactive lessons to spread the message of tolerance and promote human dignity.

“We are all responsible for creating a community where everyone is welcomed and respected,” Hirschauer said. “I invite everyone to visit and learn from the Mobile Museum of Tolerance so we can create a more inclusive community where everyone can thrive.”

Members of the public can visit the museum at Hawk Hollow Elementary on Sept. 6 from 2:30-4 p.m. at 235 Jacaranda Dr. in Bartlett or at Sunnydale Elementary on Sept. 7 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at 716 Sunnydale Blvd. in Streamwood. Rep. Hirschauer to Host Job Fair at Elgin Community College

WEST CHICAGO, Ill. — State Rep. Maura Hirschauer, D-Batavia, is hosting a job fair on Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Elgin Community College Building E-1700 Spartan Drive in Elgin. The event, hosted in partnership with state Rep. Anna Moeller, D-Elgin, state Sen. Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, state Sen. Karina Villa, D-West Chicago, and the Illinois Department of Employment Security will have on-site interviews with local businesses. Job candidates are encouraged to bring their resume.

“As we continue to deal with the effects of inflation, good-paying jobs are more important than ever,” Hirschauer said. “Our community is fortunate to have manufacturers and small businesses in need of workers, so I encourage anyone seeking employment to join us at this event.”

Several employers from around the area will be in attendance, including Suncast, Elgin Sweepers, Jel Sert, JP Morgan Chase, Ecker Center for Behavioral Health, Saint Joseph Hospital, SAS Retail Services, Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling, KCT Credit Union, International Paper and more. Several state agencies, such as the Illinois Department of Corrections, Department of Children and Family Services, Department of Human Services, Department of Juvenile Justice and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency will attend the event as well.

Community Shredding Event

Hosted by KCT Credit Union & West Chicago Public Library District

Fight identity theft and needless clutter at home by bringing your personal documents to our shredding event to have them safely shredded. Only paper materials will be accepted, small paper clips and staples do not need to be removed. Shredding accepted until shred truck is full.

Reflection

In June we celebrated Juneteenth for the second time as a national holiday, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. In June we also celebrated the LGBTQ community with Pride month, a time of reflecting on how far we have come to be a more inclusive and just nation. Both of these celebrations serve also to remind us why we continue to fight for equity and equality for all.

Reproductive Rights are under attack. The Supreme Court has pushed our country in the wrong direction with their decision to allow states to curtail some of the most private and personal rights of their residents. Abortion is still safe and legal in Illinois. As a result of the SCOTUS ruling we will see the rights of our neighbors crumble and we must look towards supporting and expanding access to the full spectrum of reproductive health care. Our work is not done here in Illinois. Onward we fight!

Representative Hirschauer is a member of the Illinois House of Representatives Veterans’ Affairs Committee. She is inviting local veterans to share their thoughts on legislation and how it affects military veterans, their families, and communities, over breakfast at the VFW in West Chicago.
