CHICAGO, Ill. – This morning, Governor J.B. Pritzker signed State Representative Maura Hirschauer’s(D-Batavia) Safe Gun Storage Act into law. The culmination of a tireless fight by advocates and legislators, the Safe Gun Storage Act(SB8) ensures household firearms are kept out of the hands of children, teenagers, and criminals through tighter storage requirements and increased regulations on reporting lost or stolen firearms.
“Safe firearm storage and responsible gun ownership are practices on which all of us, gun owners and non-gun owners alike, can agree. SB 8 is a commonsense gun safety measure that enhances safe firearm storage requirements and strengthens the reporting and data collection processes for lost and stolen guns,” said Hirschauer. “By promoting responsible gun ownership, this bill aims to prevent unauthorized access to firearms—helping reduce unintentional injuries, suicides, and acts of intentional harm, including school shootings.”
The Safe Gun Storage Act requires firearms to be properly locked away when in a household with children, at-risk individuals, or those ineligible to receive FOID cards. Additionally, the act mandates that stolen or missing firearms are reported to local law enforcement within 48 hours of the discovery. Illinois State Police will now be able to revoke a FOID card if a gun owner fails to report a lost or stolen gun more than twice.

El gobernador Pritzker firma el proyecto de ley de almacenamiento seguro de Hirschauer
CHICAGO, Illinois – Esta mañana, el gobernador J.B. Pritzker promulgó la Ley de Almacenamiento Seguro de Armas de la representante estatal Maura Hirschauer (demócrata por Batavia). Culminación de una lucha incansable de defensores y legisladores, la Ley de Almacenamiento Seguro de Armas (SB8) garantiza que las armas de fuego domésticas se mantengan fuera del alcance de niños, adolescentes y delincuentes mediante requisitos de almacenamiento más estrictos y regulaciones más estrictas para reportar armas perdidas o robadas.

La SB 8 es una medida sensata de seguridad con las armas que mejora los requisitos de almacenamiento seguro de armas de fuego y fortalece los procesos de reporte y recopilación de datos sobre armas perdidas y robadas”, declaró Hirschauer. “Al promover la tenencia responsable de armas, este proyecto de ley busca prevenir el acceso no autorizado a las armas de fuego, ayudando a reducir las lesiones accidentales, los suicidios y los actos de daño intencional, incluyendo los tiroteos escolares”.
La Ley de Almacenamiento Seguro de Armas exige que las armas de fuego se guarden bajo llave en hogares con niños, personas en riesgo o personas que no cumplen los requisitos para recibir tarjetas FOID. Además, la ley exige que las armas de fuego robadas o extraviadas se reporten a las autoridades locales dentro de las 48 horas posteriores al descubrimiento. La Policía Estatal de Illinois ahora podrá revocar una tarjeta FOID si el propietario de un arma no reporta la pérdida o el robo de un arma más de dos veces.

Are you looking for volunteer opportunities? Join our office on Fridays and Saturdays as we help with weekly food distribution at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in West Chicago. Many families in our community are feeling the effects of inflation and unsure of where to find their next meal. Pastor Josh’s weekly food distribution provides resources for those who need it the most. Volunteers are needed to help pack and distribute food boxes. Call or email our office for details.
The first week of April was a busy one in Springfield as my colleagues and I worked hard to meet the end of session deadline of April 9. Our number one priority was passing a fiscally and socially responsible budget. I am proud that we came together to create a budget that gives financial relief to the people and families that need it most, while also taking steps to restore the fiscal responsibility of the state. This budget also funds key initiatives around health care equity, community development, and business attraction. 
I am proud to announce that the Fox Valley Park District was awarded a much needed appropriation for exciting new improvements to Lippold Park. As part of their comprehensive plan to expand outdoor education programming and multi-use space at Lippold Park the FVPD will be constructing a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Fox River to connect East to West. This project will increase access to Red Oak Nature Center and will open up the trail for even more folks to use. We are so excited about this project and I am happy to have helped advocate for this much needed capital appropriation.
