Press Release: Governor Pritzker Signs SB 3926 into Law

On July 15th, Governor Pritzker signed SB 3926 into law, officially moving the Breakthrough Therapies for Veteran Suicide Prevention Program Advisory Council to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). This bill, sponsored by Representative Hirschauer, will grant the council greater access to resources to help veterans with new therapies like MDMA and pharmaceutical-grade psilocybin, which are used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder, treatment-resistant depression, and anxiety.

“Our veterans fought for America’s future. We owe them access to the future of medicine. Senate Bill 3926 strengthens the expertise needed to responsibly advance FDA Breakthrough Therapies that can bring new hope to veterans facing the invisible wounds of service,” Represenative Hirschauer said.

The Breakthrough Therapies for Veteran Suicide Prevention Program Advisory Council was originally created to inform the state of what healthcare infrastructure is necessary to best support Illinois veterans, and its new home in the IDPH will connect the council to expanded options and allow veterans to be better served by the state.

Pre-construction Notice for Barrington Road

Construction will begin this July on Barrington Road in the municipalities of Hoffman Estates and South Barrington. This two mile stretch of construction will widen and reconstruct the road starting from the intersection of Barrington Rd and Central Rd and ending at the intersection of Barrington Rd and IL Route 62. Daily lane closures and delays are expected and it is recommended that all posted signage be followed in order to ensure drivers safety. At this time, this construction is expected to end in late 2028.

Hirschauer Champions Affordability Bill that Protects Consumers from Online Price Increases

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A plan championed by state Rep. Maura Hirschauer , D-West Chicago, cracks down on online retailers discreetly using “surveillance pricing”—an AI-powered price gouging scheme that uses a shopper’s personal data to set higher individual prices.

“Technology should work for the people, not exploit them,” said Hirschauer. “Online retailers should not be using your private information to charge you more on everyday purchases. That is outrageous and clearly an invasion of privacy.”

Many apps and online stores are using personal data, browsing history, and financial and demographic profile, to set the highest price a consumer is willing to pay—a major factor driving the affordability crisis.

Hirschauer championed House Bill 4248, which creates the Algorithmic Pricing Transparency Act that bans online retailers from using a shopper’s personal data and demographic profile to set online prices to the highest amount merchants believe a given consumer will pay. Traditional, non-AI pricing models like voluntary rewards programs, manufacturing cost adjustments, and special discounts may continue.

“Now it’s time to stand up against harmful AI practices, because Illinois consumers are entitled to fairness and transparency,” said Hirschauer. “There’s innovation, and then there’s being unethical. Surveillance pricing might be cutting edge, but it’s not ethical.”

The measure passed the House on Friday, and now awaits consideration in the Senate.

Policy and Change

Thoughts and prayers? Two children were killed and at least 17 others injured when a gunman fired several rounds of bullets through the open windows of a Catholic church this morning. Thoughts and prayers have not and will not extinguish the gun lobby’s stranglehold on this country. We must stand up and pass real, comprehensive, nation-wide gun safety policies: a national assault weapon and high capacity magazine ban, and universal background checks.

Instead, we have a federal government defunding valuable and proven community violence intervention programs, and encouraging deregulation of firearms by eliminating the $200 tax stamp on suppressors, short-barreled rifles and shot guns. The steps taken by President Trump puts all of our communities at risk — we cannot stand by and watch as our federal gun safety policy buckles under the gun lobby’s pressure.

Here in Illinois we have taken the steps to keep our communities safe: from banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines in the Protect Illinois Communities Act, to keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous abusers in Karina’s Law, to mandating the safe storage of firearms when children are present in the Safe at Home Act. We are working every single day to save lives from gun violence. Make no mistake, there is more work to do. As the chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Policy, I am committed to doing that work.

We must value our children over our guns. We must commit to creating a world in which parents can drop their children off at school, at church, at playgrounds — without fear of gunfire. My heart breaks for the families who lost their precious babies today, and for the school community whose lives will be forever changed. We will honor their lives, not with thoughts and prayers alone, but with a commitment to action and change.

Governor Pritzker Signs Hirschauer’s Safe Storage Bill

CHICAGO, Ill. – This morning, Governor J.B. Pritzker signed State Representative Maura Hirschauer’s(D-Batavia) Safe Gun Storage Act into law. The culmination of a tireless fight by advocates and legislators, the Safe Gun Storage Act(SB8) ensures household firearms are kept out of the hands of children, teenagers, and criminals through tighter storage requirements and increased regulations on reporting lost or stolen firearms.

“Safe firearm storage and responsible gun ownership are practices on which all of us, gun owners and non-gun owners alike, can agree. SB 8 is a commonsense gun safety measure that enhances safe firearm storage requirements and strengthens the reporting and data collection processes for lost and stolen guns,” said Hirschauer. “By promoting responsible gun ownership, this bill aims to prevent unauthorized access to firearms—helping reduce unintentional injuries, suicides, and acts of intentional harm, including school shootings.”

The Safe Gun Storage Act requires firearms to be properly locked away when in a household with children, at-risk individuals, or those ineligible to receive FOID cards. Additionally, the act mandates that stolen or missing firearms are reported to local law enforcement within 48 hours of the discovery. Illinois State Police will now be able to revoke a FOID card if a gun owner fails to report a lost or stolen gun more than twice.
